1. Brief About the Scholarship

Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships to stimulate international exchange and global research collaboration involving over 180 partner countries.

 The scholarships are granted by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), under the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).

 They encompass research fellowships, PhD positions, post-doctoral studies, and select artist programs. Applications for the 2026–2027 cycle open on August 4, 2025.

2. Scholarship Benefits

Selected recipients enjoy a range of generous support packages:

  • Monthly stipend: CHF 1,920 for research/PhD/art scholarships; CHF 3,500 for postdoctoral scholars.
  • One-time housing allowance: CHF 300.

  • Return airfare allowance, for non-EU/EFTA beneficiaries.

  • Sciences & Engineering
  • Health & Biomedical Research

  • Arts & Design for master’s-level programs in music, visual arts, and theater (artist-specific, limited countries).



4. Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the 2026–2027 round, applicants generally must:

  • Hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) for research/PhD/postdoc; or a Bachelor’s degree for arts scholarships.
  • Be born after December 31, 1990.
  • Not have resided in Switzerland for more than one year before the start date.
  • Secure a letter of support from a Swiss supervisor or institution.
  • Demonstrate solid language skills (English, French, German, or Italian as relevant).
  • Not have already received a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship before.



5. Required Documents

Applicants must prepare a complete application package, typically including:

  • Completed FCS application form (downloaded from country-specific site).
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV); plus cultural/academic portfolio for arts applicants.
  • Motivation letter (about 2 pages) and detailed research or artistic proposal (max 5 pages).
  • Supervisor’s letter of support (with their short CV).
  • Reference letters (usually 2, confidential).
  • Academic transcripts, diplomas, and language certificates (if needed).
  • Passport copy, medical certificate, plus any sponsorship or translation attestations.
  • Arts applicants may also need creative samples (audio, visuals, videos).



6. Application Procedure

  • August 4, 2025: Applications open—download country-specific application package and guidelines.
  • September–October 2025 (varies by country): Submit two sets (original + copy) of your complete application—one to your Swiss embassy or national authority.
  • By end of May 2026: FCS announces final decisions.
  • September 2026: Scholarship period begins at your Swiss host institution.
