1. About the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals

The Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) is a prestigious scholarship funded by the Swedish government and administered by the Swedish Institute, a public agency.

Its main objective is to develop future global leaders who can contribute to sustainable development in their home countries and strengthen international cooperation.

The scholarship supports talented professionals from selected countries who wish to pursue full-time master's studies at Swedish universities.

For the 2027/2028 academic year, the scholarship supports eligible master's programmes beginning in autumn 2027. Depending on the chosen programme, studies may last one or two years.

Unlike scholarships that primarily target recent graduates, the Swedish Institute Scholarship places considerable emphasis on professional experience, leadership ability, and the applicant's potential to create positive change in society.

2. What Does the Scholarship Cover?

The Swedish Institute Scholarship is a fully funded opportunity offering several financial and professional benefits.

  • Full tuition fee coverage

The scholarship covers 100% of the tuition fees for the eligible master's programme. The Swedish Institute pays the tuition fees directly to the university.

This means successful scholarship recipients do not have to pay the covered tuition fees themselves.

  • Monthly living allowance of SEK 12,000

Successful applicants receive a monthly allowance of SEK 12,000 throughout the scholarship period to support their living expenses in Sweden.

This financial support helps students manage everyday expenses while concentrating on their academic studies.

  • One-time travel grant of SEK 15,000

The scholarship provides a one-time travel grant of SEK 15,000 to help cover travel expenses to Sweden.

For applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, the travel grant is SEK 10,000.

The travel grant is not available to students who already reside in Sweden at the time of the award.

  • International professional networking opportunities

Scholarship recipients become members of the SI Network for Global Professionals (NFGP), which provides opportunities to connect with professionals, experts, and other scholarship holders.

This network supports professional development, knowledge exchange, and international collaboration.

  • Sweden Alumni Network

After completing their studies, scholarship recipients become part of the Sweden Alumni Network, allowing them to maintain professional connections and relationships developed during their studies.

Important: The scholarship does not cover the University Admissions application fee, additional financial support for accompanying family members, or insurance. Applicants should check the insurance arrangements with their universities.

3. Available Fields of Study

The Swedish Institute Scholarship supports eligible English-taught master's programmes in several academic and professional areas.

For the 2027/2028 academic year, the scholarship focuses on the following broad areas:

  • Governance: Public administration, political science, public policy, international relations, and related fields.
  • Public Health: Global health, health policy, public health sciences, and related disciplines.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Business development, innovation management, entrepreneurship, and related fields.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics): Engineering, information technology, natural sciences, mathematics, and other eligible technical disciplines.

Important: Not every master's programme within these fields is automatically eligible. The Swedish Institute publishes a specific list of eligible master's programmes for each scholarship cycle. The official list for 2027/2028 is scheduled for publication on 13 November 2026.

Applicants should select their master's programmes from this official list before submitting their university applications.

5. Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals 2027/2028, applicants must satisfy several requirements.

  • Citizenship of an eligible country

You must be a citizen of one of the 34 eligible countries listed above.

  • Apply for an eligible master's programme

You must apply for an eligible, full-time, English-taught master's programme at a Swedish university starting in autumn 2027.

You can apply for up to four master's programmes through the central University Admissions application portal.

  • Work experience requirement

One of the most important eligibility requirements is professional work experience.

For applicants from Ethiopia and most of the other eligible countries, you must demonstrate at least 3,000 hours of work experience before February 2027.

The experience can be accumulated through a maximum of three employers.

Work experience may include:

  • Full-time employment
  • Part-time employment
  • Freelancing
  • Self-employment and entrepreneurship

Applicants should carefully document their professional experience using the official Swedish Institute forms and supporting evidence.

There are special rules for citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. These applicants must demonstrate work experience, but the same minimum 3,000-hour requirement does not apply.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience

In addition to professional experience, applicants must demonstrate leadership experience.

Leadership can be demonstrated through:

  • Leadership responsibilities in your current or previous employment
  • Managing teams, projects, or organizational activities
  • Entrepreneurship and business development
  • Leadership roles in civil society organizations
  • Initiatives that contribute to positive social or community change

Applicants should provide concrete examples demonstrating their ability to lead, influence others, take responsibility, and contribute to meaningful results.

  • Admission to an eligible master's programme

You must be admitted or conditionally admitted to an eligible master's programme on the university admission results date, 1 April 2027.

Being placed on a reserve or waiting list is not sufficient for scholarship eligibility.

Other restrictions also apply, including previous Swedish Institute scholarship recipients and certain people with existing Swedish or EU/EEA residency or citizenship status. Check the official eligibility page for the complete list.
